Chemical Processing Industry (CPI)
Because it has high heat resistance, low permeability and high mechanical strength, Kynar® PVDF is used as a contact surface for the production, storage and transfer of highly corrosive fluids. Kynar® PVDF resin is used in mechanical components, fabricated vessels, tanks, pumps, valves, filters, heat exchangers, tower packing, piping systems, and many other applications.
Kynar® and Kynar Flex® resins can be fabricated into a wide range of components including:
- Pipes, fittings, valves, pump assemblies, sheet and stock shapes, films and tapes
- Tubing (flexible & rigid), tanks and vessels, nozzles
- Membranes and filter housings
- Powder and dip coatings
Kynar® PVDF components are used extensively in the high-purity semiconductor market (low extractable values) and the pulp and paper industry (chemically resistant to halogens and acids). They are also employed in the processing of nuclear waste (radiation and hot-acid resistant) and the general chemical processing industry (extreme chemical and temperature applications).
Lithium Ion Battery
The tremendous electrochemical stability of Kynar® PVDF homopolymers and Kynar Flex® copolymers makes them widely used in the Lithium Ion battery industry as binders for cathodes and in coatings for battery separators. The Kynar® HSV series of resins has become famous across the world in high adhesion, low solids cathode binder formulations.
Likewise, the Kynar® LBG grade is synonymous with high performance in separator coatings. Arkema also offers next generation waterborne solutions based upon proprietary emulsion polymerization processes.
Wire and Cable
Kynar Flex® PVDF has excellent fire resistance, abrasion resistance, low-smoke emission, chemical resistance and impact resistance. Depending on the test method, it has up to a 150°C rating - and may be irradiated for even higher ratings. Kynar® PVDF is used in plenum cables, automotive and aerospace cables, mining cables, fire alarm cables and shipboard cables.
Kynar® PVDF foaming technology has been developed to create closed cell foams in densities ranging from 0.03 - 1.50 g/cc3. These foams can be created in a batch process in sheets or continuous extrusion such as wire jacketing, pipes, rods and sheets. For continuous extrusion Arkema has designed Kynar® 2620 FC as a foaming concentrate to create foams with 20 -50% air volume.
Select grades of Kynar® resin easily achieve the flame spread/smoke developed rating of 25/50 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84.
A wide variety of Kynar Flex® resin grades are offered for use in the plenum cable industry. Cables produced using Kynar® PVDF resin meet the 0.50/0.15/5 requirements when tested to NFPA 262 (UL 910).
Polymer Processing Aids (PPA)
Kynar Flex® PPA grades are additives designed to aid in the extrusion of mainstream thermoplastic resins. Kynar Flex® PPA additives may be used in blown film, cast film, blow molding, wire and cable jacketing, pipe and tube extrusion, and extruded fiber processes. When used at very low levels of 100–1,000 ppm, Kynar Flex® PPA additives can provide benefits to a wide range of resins, particularly polyolefins. These benefits include elimination of melt-fracture (sharkskin), reduction of extrusion pressure, reduced die build-up, increased output, reduced energy consumption, and faster start-up or changeover time.
Oil and Gas
For several decades, Kynar® PVDF has been a reference for the global subsea oil production market. Resisting the most hostile physical and chemical demands, Kynar® PVDF resins are used as a major component in the constuction of heavy duty flexible risers that transport corrosive crude oil from the bottom of the ocean to the floating production platforms miles above.

Photovoltaic Backsheet / Solar Energy
Arkema produces Kynar® Film for use in the protection of solar module backsheet laminates. This patented multilayer film is known across the globe for its premium performance in KPK® backsheet constructions (consisting of two Kynar® film layers sandwiching a PET midlayer). The Kynar® film itself is also a 3 layer structure – comprised of two pure PVDF outer layers sandwiching a white-pigmented midlayer alloy.
Water Filtration Membranes
Kynar® PVDF resin is a well-known membrane material for applications ranging from water purification to bioprocess separations due to its extreme chemical resistance during cleaning cycles with aggressive oxidants and halogenated cleaners. It is also well-known for its strength, ductility and durability. The combination of these properties allows for the construction of membrane modules that last longer and require fewer cleaning cycles compared to conventional resin alternatives. Several grades offer FDA and NSF compliance, and are compatible with select direct food/beverage contact applications.
Kynar® PVDF resins are soluble in n-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylacetamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and dimethylformamide and can be conveniently solution-cast into porous membranes by NIPS phase inversion. It is used to manufacture flat sheet, hollow fiber, and TIPS process membranes. Kynar® DH100 is an innovative functionalized PVDF resin offering permanent hydrophilicity (higher throughput rates over the lifespan of the membrane).
High Purity Chemical Processing
As semiconductor and pharmaceutical production requires increasingly pure materials, high purity Kynar® PVDF resin grades meet the most stringent industry needs. Kynar® PVDF resin regulatory approvals include food and water use certifications and compliance for use in several healthcare applications.
Automotive and Transportation
Kynar® PVDF resin is used in both public and private transport vehicles as a barrier liner for automotive fuel lines and gas station fuel pipes, in weather resistant decorative films, as binders and separator coatings in HEV/EV batteries, as molded and thermoformed body components, and as tank trailer linings for corrosion protection. Kynar® PVDF resins have strength, flame resistance, durability and versatility that make them well suited for automotive wiring harnesses and plastic optical fibers.
The excellent outdoor aging and weathering properties of Kynar 500® PVDF resin led to its use in long-lasting paints for coating metal sheet and extrusions for the past 50 years. Kynar Aquatec® resins offer the same kind of extreme weather protection in waterborne paints for factory and field applied, low-VOC coatings.
The world famous Kynar 500® licensing program has been in existence since 1965 and has ensured a long standing tradition of excellence on a global basis.
Kynar® resins may also be used to protect thermoplastics through coextrusion or film lamination techniques to obtain anti-grime and anti-graffiti surfaces with excellent weathering properties.
Kynar Flex® 2850 PC is a functional powder coating system which enables a thick spray coating of Kynar® PVDF resin to be applied to metals for outstanding corrosion resistance. Manufactured with no additives, Kynar Flex® 2850 PC complies with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) requirements (Class VI) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations 177.2600, and is suitable for coating equipment used in the pharmaceutical, food, chemical and semiconductor industries.
Kynar® ADX FLEX 281reactive PVDF resin was designed to bond to polyamides, polyolefins, and metals. Kynar® ADX powder for spraying or fluid bed dipping provides excellent primerless adhesion to steel or aluminum, offering a highly durable coating that is superior to stainless steel in chemical resistance.
